Unai Emery will cringe at one Ezri Konsa aspect despite 'heroic' moment as England conquer Norway
Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa will be buzzing after helping England reach the World Cup semi-finals.
The Three Lions had to fight back to defeat Norway 2-1 in the boiling hot Miami conditions to set up a date with old rivals Argentina.
Andreas Schjelderup opend the scoring with a fortunte cross-shot on Saturday, which left England rocking after a decent start.
Jude Bellingham's fine individual goal restored parity, though, and it was the Real Madrid man who bagged the winner in extra time.
It means England are just two games away from ending a 60-year wait for a major trophy.
Konsa put in a decent performance, including one particularly wonderful moment, but one aspect will have frustrated Villa boss Unai Emery.
How did the media react to Ezri Konsa's England performance?
You have to really credit Konsa's attitude, as he was shunted out to right-back against Norway.
The full-back position has been a really tricky one for the Three Lions, and Jarrell Quansah's suspension necessitated Konsa shifting out from centre-back.
There was a general consensus among the media reaction that Konsa did not get close enough to Schjelderup for Norway's goal.
However, he did make a wonderful clearance off the line in the second half when Kristoffer Ajer had seen a looping header hit the crossbar.
The Daily Mail scored Konsa a 7/10, and wrote: "Had to get closer to Schjelderup in stopping cross for Norway opener and was too slow to the danger. But he recovered and saved a goal when winning goalmouth header after Ajer effort hit bar. Had given his lot by time of substitution."
The Daily Mirror also gave him a 7/10, opining: "Brought in to the right back, did not offer much going forward but made heroic clearance."
Rounding out a series of 7/10s, the Guardian added: "Adapted well to new role at right-back, even if Schjelderup’s goal came down his side."
Konsa equips himself well in positional change for England
Konsa is a real solid performer for club and country, and his versatility is something that has endeared himself to Villa supporters.
His willingness to do whatever is required for the team was on display again last night as Norway were eventually put to the sword.
Defensively, Konsa was extremely solid for England, winning his one tackle, and making two interceptions and clearances apiece.
He also had two recoveries, won two ground duels, won all three of his aerial duels, and was not dribbled past during the game.
Going forward, he did attempt one successul dribble, though his one attempted cross was unsuccessful, and he made 13 carries.
He was comfortable in possession too, finishing with a 98 per cent pass accuracy, and completing 34 of 35 attempted passes in the opposition half.
To say he offered little going forward may be accurate, but it doesn't reflect how big Konsa's heart is and his determination to do a job for the team.
He was absolutely spent on his feet when he was withdrawn for club-mate Morgan Rogers in the 88th minute, but he had more than played his part.
Emery is a perfectionist so won't be delighted with Konsa, but he did more than enough in another huge shift.
