UEFA tipped to investigate Aston Villa after 'unsavoury' scenes vs Fenerbahce

Published on:

Keith Hackett has labelled Aston Villa fans' chanting towards Mason Greenwood as "unsavoury."

The Fenerbahce forward was arrested in January 2022, just days after starring for Manchester United against West Ham.

He was later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

All of those charges against the former England international were dropped in February 2023.

No fresh legal charges have been brought against him or changes to his legal status since then.

The 25-year-old returned to England on Wednesday night, as his Fenerbahce team took on Aston Villa in the Champions League.

What needs to happen for UEFA to investigate Aston Villa relating to Mason Greenwood chants?

Unai Emery's side ran out 6-0 winners over the Turkish outfit, as they continue to set the pace in the league phase of the Champions League.

Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley both scored braces, whilst Johan Manzambi and Tammy Abraham also got in on the action.

During the game, sections of the Villa Park crowd could be heard signing derogatory chants aimed at Greenwood, and was booed throughout the night.

Speaking exclusively with Villa News, ex-FIFA official Hackett believes that the authorities should now get involved with the situation.

"I do think that these chants are unsavoury," Hackett said.

"If the UEFA Match Delegate or Greenwood’s club report the matter UEFA will take action. The authorities should take action."

So, how did Greenwood fare on Wednesday night against Aston Villa amid a cauldron of boos and chants?

How many shots did Greenwood take vs Aston Villa?

Greenwood's return to England on Wednesday night dominated the headlines ahead of Aston Villa's clash with Fenerbahce.

He's a key player for the Turkish side, having played 14 times in all competitions prior to Wednesday, scoring six and assisting four.

Ismail Kartal decided to start the Englishman on Fenerbahce's right wing, but replaced him with 20 minutes to play in the game.

Per FotMob, Greenwood completed 32 of his 35 pass attempts successfully and put three shots on goal, with one being on target.

He played two passes into the final third, made one tackle, won three fouls and won four of his eight ground duels.

However, he also failed with his two dribble and cross attempts, created zero chances and was dispossessed once.

Overall then, it was a night to forget for Greenwood, but one that could see Aston Villa punished by UEFA relating to the fan chants aimed at him.
