Tyrone Mings makes nod to his past after Aston Villa victory vs Newcastle United
Tyrone Mings rolled back the years for Aston Villa against Newcastle United.
Despite now being 33-years old, Mings is proving that there's still plenty of gas left in the tank.
Having joined Villa permanently all the way back in 2019, this is now his eighth full season in the West Midlands.
But, the defender is out of contract at the end of this season, which is a situation that demands to be addressed soon enough.
For now, all Mings can do is focus on his football and showing to Unai Emery what he can still offer in this side.
He did exactly that in Villa's big 1-0 win over Newcastle on Saturday night.
What did Tyrone Mings say after Aston Villa win vs Newcastle?
A corner has well and truly been turned at Villa Park, as showcased on Tyneside this weekend.
Emery's Villans rocked up to one of the toughest places to play as an away side in the Premier League, and took all three points at St James' Park.
It was Johan Manzambi who continued his superb form in front of goal with his third of the season to seal the win for Villa.
Mings captained and started the game in central defence, but was forced to play the final 15 at left-back after Aaron Wan-Bissaka's injury.
Per FotMob, he completed 85 per cent of his passes, created one chance, played six line-breaking passes and three into the final third.
He also made six clearances, three recoveries, committed zero fouls and led his Villa defensive comrades with 14 sprints.
Posting to his Instagram story after the game, Mings captioned the iconic Spider-Man glasses meme by saying: "15 mins at left-back. Don't mind it."
But why did Mings include an image of himself playing for Ipswich Town within this post?
Mings wasn't always a central defender
Ever since joining Aston Villa, Mings has almost exclusively operated in central defence.
Indeed, 215 of his 217 career Villains appearances have come as a centre-back, per Transfermarkt.
Mings joined Villa from Bournemouth, but prior to his time with the Cherries he spent two-and-a-half seasons with Ipswich Town.
It was at Portman Road where he almost exclusively played as a left-back, thus explaining why he referenced his time with the Tractor Boys.
51 of his 63 appearances for Ipswich came at left-back, showing just how much football he's played there.
With Matteo Ruggeri dealing with an injury problem, Emery may be forced to call upon Mings' experience here over the coming weeks.
