Unai Emery has been working hard at Aston Villa over the international break, and the work undertaken over the last 10 days has been "huge", according to The Athletic.

Sources have told the media outlet [20 November] that the Spanish manager and his coaching staff have doubled down and are working "harder than ever" to return to winning ways.

The Villans have lost four consecutive games and are winless in the last five matches in all competitions.

Aston Villa period a test for Unai Emery

Emery has lost four matches in a row for the first time in his managerial career, with change clearly needed to get back on track.

The Spaniard has enjoyed success and all the glory since being appointed in the Villa Park dugout, so the current period is something that not many have seen in recent months, but the fans need to back the manager.

Villa fielded their second team in the Carabao Cup against Crystal Palace on 30 October, and the 2-1 loss wasn't shocking.

Then the 4-1 defeat to Tottenham was damaging, though, and the loss at Club Brugge in the Champions League didn't help the cause going into the Liverpool game.

Villa have had some tough fixtures to contend with, and it shouldn't come as a surprise that there has been a dip in form from the Lions, considering they've been playing European football.

It showcases the lack of strength in depth at Emery's disposal, and with many key players featuring for their countries during the international break, it remains to be seen whether the Villans can be at their best against Palace in the Premier League on 23 November.
