Matty Cash pokes fun at Aston Villa 'hangover' talk after textbook Man City win
Matty Cash and his Aston Villa teammates are laughing at the talk of a Villans hangover following a memorable final day victory over Man City.
It's been a wonderful couple of weeks for Aston Villa and their supporters, with many undoubtedly still pinching themselves at how their 2025-26 season has ended.
Four wins from their last five games in all competitions, winning the Europa League against Freiburg and then beating Man City at the Etihad in Pep Guardiola's final match as City boss.
That's not forgetting the 4-2 win at Villa Park over Liverpool sandwiched between all of that; Unai Emery and his side have earned a lie down.
Villa's win over Man City will send everyone connected with the football club into the summer with huge hope and excitement for next season, in what was a vintage away performance at the Etihad.
What did Matty Cash say after Man City vs Aston Villa?
After beating Freiburg in the Europa League final on 20 May, Aston Villa players and staff certainly enjoyed themselves, both in Turkey and back in Birmingham.
The squad partied into the night in Istanbul, before returning home for a bus parade through the city on the Thursday to celebrate their achievement with tens of thousands of Villa fans.
| Cash's 25-26 PL stats | Result |
| Shots | 30 |
| Chances created | 30 |
| Dribble success | 55% |
| Defensive contributions | 186 |
| Average match rating | 6.9/10 |
As such, there most certainly will have been a few sore heads in the Villans camp leading up to their final day visit to Man City.
With this in mind and given it was Guardiola's big send-off, the football gods looked destined to rule in favour of City winning at the Etihad.
However, that wasn't to be the case, as Villa ran out 2-1 winners with a performance that certainly didn't scream of a squad nursing a hangover.
Taking to his Instagram account after the game, Cash made a tongue-in-cheek comment surrounding this.
"Season done! Not bad on a hangover that," Cash joked, and it certainly got a response out of his Villa teammates.
Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa, Morgan Rogers, Lamare Bogarde, John McGinn, Youri Tielemans and Ross Barkley all responded with crying laughing emojis.
Villa's Man City win by the numbers
Aston Villa were tipped to spoil Guardiola's leaving party due to the Spaniard's recent poor record against the Villa Park outfit, having now lost four of his last six games against the Villans.
However, when Antoine Semenyo gave the Cityzens a 1-0 lead after 23 minutes, it looked as though the game was going to follow the script of giving Guardiola a win to end his remarkable City reign.
But a Watkins second-half double tore that script up, and instead saw Villa sign off the season with a memorable victory, and the stats show just how much of a textbook away performance it was from Emery's men.
As per FotMob, City were only able to register three shots on target in the entire game, with all of those coming in the first half as Villa limited the home side to just four second-half attempts.
Villa won 28 tackles, made 11 interceptions, six blocks and 37 clearances at the Etihad in a spirited defensive display, winning 62 per cent of their total duels and 67 per cent on the ground compared to City's 38 and 33 per cent respectively.
City weren't able to put a single accurate cross into the Villans' box in the second half, and Emery's side even finished the game with a higher pass success rate of 90 per cent to City's 89 per cent.
Registering 48 per cent possession, Villa didn't allow City to dictate the tempo nor monopolise the football like Guardiola's teams often do, and that enabled them to have a constant presence and foothold in the match.
All in all, it was another tactical masterclass from Emery, and superb battling performance to a man from the Aston Villa players, with a second-half display in particular that fully merited the three points.
