Keith Hackett spots double referee mistake in Aston Villa win vs Tottenham, 'clear offence' missed

Keith Hackett has called out Sam Barrott after Aston Villa won 3-2 against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

The Villans are finally on the winning trail in the Premier League.

Unai Emery's side were desperate for a win, but faced a side with equal problems on the pitch.

It was a cagey affair at times, but felt as if the hosts were more likely to secure victory.

That was until Manzambi found the net to silence the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Just two minutes later, Spurs felt as if they should have been given a spot kick.

Mateus Fernandes was darting into the box and was setting up to get a shot away.

He did exactly that, but not before Joao Gomes gave him a shove to knock the Portuguese off his stride.

The strike didn't trouble Zion Suzuki, but that didn't stop the home side from making their feelings known.

Barrott wasn't having any of it, while the suggestion remains that he could have got it wrong.

The general feeling inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was that the home side should have had a penalty.

That wasn't echoed by the referee, but certainly was by former PGMOL chief Hackett.

He couldn't be any more clear on his thoughts.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Hackett said: "Gomes has clearly pushed his opponent, Fernandes, with sufficient force that puts him off balance and he goes to ground.

"A push of this nature is a clear offence and a penalty kick should have been awarded."

It doesn't get more clear-cut than that as it appears Villa and Gomes have got away with one in the capital.

They won't mind now though as they go into the international break with a massive three points. Exactly what the doctor ordered.
