Aston Villa told to do all they can to stop Jacob Ramsey transfer to Tottenham

Villa News Speaking to Don Goodman

Villa News is delighted to have noted Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman joining its team of Villa experts at the start of 2024. Goodman played for the likes of Bradford, West Brom, Sunderland, Wolves, Motherwell and Walsall in his career and since hanging up his boots, he's been working in the media with Sky Sports. Don will bring you expert insight on all the goings on at Villa.

Don Goodman insists Aston Villa should not be contemplating the sale of Jacob Ramsey to Premier League rivals Tottenham.

The Times reported on 27 June that Spurs were willing to offer £20million plus Giovani Lo Celso in exchange for Ramsey.

Villa are said to have knocked back that initial approach, but £30m plus Lo Celso has been touted as a deal they may consider [Bryan King, 30 June].

However, Goodman is a massive fan of Ramsey and believes he could be a key player under Unai Emery should he avoid any further injuries.

"100 per cent," Goodman told Villa News when asked if the Villans should be doing everything they can to retain Ramsey.

"He's had his injury issues and I think that was the problem for Jacob Ramsey, rather than any ability issues. If he hadn't have been injured, there was every chance on the basis of what he showed that he could have been in Germany with the England squad.

"He was flying at one point and the England scouts were keeping an eye on him. So he's an undoubted talent who just couldn't get on the pitch enough last season.

"Ultimately, is it a case of Villa looking to bring in more money in terms of PSR with him being a youth product? If I were Aston Villa, I'd definitely be keeping him - he's a player who could be a regular in this Aston Villa team and he has all the potential in the world."

Jacob Ramsey can be big player for Aston Villa

The fact that Tottenham are willing to offer £20m plus a player for Ramsey says it all about how liked the midfielder is.

It looked earlier in the summer as though the Villans may have been forced to sell the player given the financial uncertainty that PSR brings.

However, Villa are now looking to strengthen the squad rather than take away from it, and Ramsey can be the classic 'like a new signing' in 2024-25.

The 23-year-old made just eight Premier League starts last season, but there is no reason why he cannot double that tally next time around.

With two assists in his final five outings of the campaign, Ramsey is in a good position to pick up from where he left off once recovered from the injury that curtailed his 2023-24 season.
