George Hemmings caught the eye as Aston Villa defeated Coventry City in round three of the Carabao Cup.

Unai Emery's side ran out 3-1 victors at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Wednesday to book their spot in round four next month.

Tammy Abraham rolled in his first goal of the season to get Aston Villa up and rolling in just the seventh minute, only for Victor Torp's excellent free-kick to level things up.

Ross Barkley headed in Ibrahim Mbaye's corner to restore the lead, though, and Abraham slammed in from close range at another corner to seal the win after the break.

It was an important victory for Villa, who have just one point from four Premier League outings, with only Coventry below them in the table.

And one of Villa's emerging talents in Hemmings played a really influential role for Unai Emery's men.

Hemmings has been one of the brighter notes of Villa's difficult start to the campaign.

Morgan Rogers' sale to Chelsea has left a real opportunity for Hemmings, who has made seven appearances in all competitions so far this season.

It was his delightful assist that set up Abraham for his first goal of the campaign, the striker going through one-on-one to roll into the bottom-right corner.

It all came about through Hemmings' outstanding outside-of-the-boot pass to set Abraham through on goal.

Sky Sports co-commentator Sam Parkin was left gushing with Hemmings when analysing the goal on Sky Sports+.

Parkin said: "It's a sumptuous throughball. It really is a beautiful piece of play.

Hemmings put in an industrious performance on the left of three-man supporting attack for Abraham.

His movement and combination with McGinn and Mbaye was something that caused Coventry issues throughout.

By the end of the game, Hemmings had one assist from his one big chance created, while he also made one key pass, and had an accurate cross.

His pass success rate was at 87 per cent, which dropped a little to 83 in the opposition third - but that was more a result of the fact he was trying to be forward-thinking with his passing.

Hemmings was successful with three of his four dribbles, had a total carrying distance of 88.7 metres, and 58.9m of progressive carries.
