Gary Neville can't believe Aston Villa 'mystery' that he's seen already
Aston Villa are in a real mess right now.
Unai Emery has seen his squad decimated and sold, mainly to their Premier League rivals, too.
Morgan Rogers, Lucas Digne, Ezri Konsa and Youri Tielemans have all been sold already.
Even with that, Emi Martinez and Ollie Watkins are expected to leave before the 1 September deadline, too.
The Villans have always complained about PSR and financial rules in the Premier League, but this is much deeper than that.
Profits are through the roof, yet several new signings are already looking like gambles, with Gary Neville completely stumped.
What has gone wrong at Villa?
All of that came to a front at Brighton on Sunday, with Villa thumped 4-0 and embarrassed.
Joao Gomes was the only new signing to start, with the Brazilian sent off before half-time at the AMEX.
Neville believes the issues are far deeper than the surface, with early season struggles like last season dismissed.
Speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, the Manchester United legend couldn't believe what has happened this summer.
"What a shame," Neville started.
"It's a mystery to me what is going on there. I looked at that team that Emery had to field and the substitutes bench.
"I've got a lot of love for Aston Villa, and Emery. What is going on?"
Zion Suzuki, Matteo Ruggeri and Alejandro Garnacho were all on the bench, with the latter two only getting small cameos.
Could Aston Villa seriously struggle this season?
Johan Manzambi is the marquee signing so far, but the Swiss star has been hit by an injury already.
With Brian Madjo also injured, Villa have little presence in the final third right now, with signings desperately needed.
They can forget PSR and the new squad cost ratios for now, given the serious amount of money they've banked.
Emery desperately needs several signings, and NSWE need to deliver for him given what he has given them in return over the years.
The Premier League will only get harder, too, especially when the Champions League returns.
So, if Villa don't want to throw away their season, they need to get busy really quickly, but not only that, it has to be serious business.
If not, those worries will only escalate.
