Aston Villa Women ace Adriana Leon produced an “excellent” solo goal to secure a 1-0 win against Brighton Women.

That is according to BBC Sport journalist Harry Poole after the Midlands club won the Women's Super League (WSL) clash on Sunday (17 December).

Leon netted the only goal of the match in the 63rd minute, with Mayumi Pacheco sent off for the hosts in the closing minutes.

“Villa were forced to play out the closing stages with 10 players after Pacheco received two yellow cards in the final 10 minutes - but Leon’s excellent solo goal proved enough to seal three significant points,” Poole wrote for BBC Sport (17 December).

Huge win

It really was a fine moment from Leon, who took the game by the scruff of the neck and decided to win it all on her own.

And the victory represents a massive three points for Aston Villa Women, who have now distanced themselves from the WSL relegation fight at this key stage of the campaign.

The league now breaks up for the winter, with Carla Ward’s side now four points above bottom two clubs West Ham and Bristol City.

The Midlands outfit are also ahead of Brighton after the victory, with the former on nine points and the latter on eight, with both having played 10 matches.

But they were certainly made to work hard for the win on home soil, with a moment of brilliance from Leon all that could separate the two clubs.

It was also a difficult challenge to see out the victory after Pacheco’s late red card, but much to the delight of Ward, the Villa players got the job done in the end.
