Aston Villa fans were shocked to see a Vertu Trophy penalty shootout against Blackpool last 38 attempts on Tuesday.

The Young Lions travelled to Bloomfield Road on 17 December and secured a place in the round of 16 after a lengthy spot-kick showdown.

This was the second shootout that the Villans have won in the competition, after beating Bolton Wanderers in the group stages earlier in the year.

It is safe to say that the battle against the Tangerines was different and left fans shocked despite eventually coming away with the win.

The Villa youngsters have already proved that they are confident from 12 yards after Ben Broggio's effort in the UEFA Youth League against RB Leipzig.

It won't come as a surprise to the B6 club to see a reaction to this result given how long this shootout went on after the draw in normal time.

One fan described the spot kicks as "the most ridiculous penalty shootout you will see".

This is certainly the case as it comes in the fourth-longest spot kick in recorded history, registering ahead of an England Under-21s clash against the Netherlands which featured 32 attempts [GOAL.com].

Another supporter labelled the shootout as "crazy", while another was pleased with the result, labelling the penalties as "impressive".

There is no doubt that this moment was "mental", as many fans said, given that the likes haven't been seen in England since 2021.

After the win was confirmed, many supporters congratulated the youngsters for their victory against a League One side with one describing the group as "special".

Things are going well for the first team under Unai Emery, but this win for the academy side proves there is a "bright future" at Villa Park, as one fan suggested.
