Don Goodman has praised Aston Villa for not losing focus on the future after signing young midfielder Max Jenner from West Brom.

Villa confirmed on their official website on 6 July that Jenner has been awarded a deal as part of the club’s scholarship programme.

The Villans have made a habit of snapping up young talents from under the noses of West Midlands rivals West Brom, with Keilan Quinn also making the switch earlier this year.

In an exciting period for the club in which a £50m deal for Everton's Amadou Onana is on the verge of going through [Fabrizio Romano, 13 July], Goodman is glad the club is continuing to look at signings stars of the future.

"When they brought in Morgan Rogers, that was a sign of what was to come," he told Villa News. "They ended up playing him more than they probably anticipated because he did so well when given an opportunity.

"I've previously admitted I didn't think he was Premier League ready, but he actually did really well, so all credit to him.

"But you can tell they're still focusing on looking at the future in terms of signing another young and promising talent, which is only a good thing for the club."

Aston Villa have one eye on the future with transfer business

Bringing in a player such as Jenner would barely have registered on the minds of many Villa fans. That is hardly surprising, as supporters want players who are ready for the here and now.

However, there is nothing better than seeing an academy graduate coming through the ranks, which is a position someone like Jenner may find himself in a few years from now.

Villa are pulling off some impressive transfer business at senior level and likewise in the age-grade ranks, as highlighted by this under-the-radar signing.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.

Only time will tell if the current crop of Under-16s talents will successfully make the step up, but fingers crossed we see more from some of them down the line.

For now, Villa just need to continue doing exactly what they are doing and the future will continue to look very bright indeed.
