Aston Villa player ratings vs Club Brugge: Pau Torres sensational as 4/10 teammate lets Unai Emery down
Aston Villa opened their Champions League campaign with a 3-2 win against Club Brugge on Tuesday.
There has been plenty of upheaval for Unai Emery to deal with since the Villans lifted the Europa League trophy.
However, it looked like they would have little issue dispatching the Belgian side, with goals from John McGinn, Emi Buendia and Nicolas Jackson.
Hugo Vetlesen had levelled the contest in the 19th minute, and Nicolo Tresoldi brought the nerves up a level with his penalty just after an hour.
It was the perfect start to the European campaign for the B6 outfit despite the scares, and they will hope to expand on that next time out.
The domestic season has not got up to speed and hopefully this result will be the catalyst for that to improve, as Villa News rates each player out of 10 for their display in Belgium.
Pau Torres stands out in Aston Villa win
Pau Torres has often been a trusted lieutenant for Emery and that was the case again this time.
The defender's attacking prowess was on full display as he created four chances and recorded two assists, per FotMob data.
The Spaniard made eight passes into the final third, completing 63 per cent of his long passes.
Defensively, he made 10 contributions, with one tackle, eight clearances and one block, while also having four recoveries.
In terms of duels, he won the only one that he contested on the ground, for a success rate of 100 per cent.
It is clear to see why Emery has so much faith in the 29-year-old after his latest European display.
George Hemmings has a dismal evening in Aston Villa win
George Hemmings made his debut in Europe's premier competition, but it was not a good night for the youngster.
He had just 36 touches in the contest, and completed just 69 per cent of his passes in Bruges.
Hemmings missed two big chances, and created just a single chance for a teammate.
While the 19-year-old did manage eight touches in the opposition box, he completed just a single dribble attempt from the three that he had.
He made two defensive contributions, with one tackle and one clearance, while also having three recoveries.
In terms of duels, he won just six of 12 on the ground, for a success rate of just 50 per cent.
If Hemmings wants to stay in the side, he needs to produce more than that.
