Aston Villa fell to a thoroughly embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Brighton in their first Premier League game of the season on Sunday.

The Villans suffered one of their darkest losses in the modern era at the hands of the Seagulls, conceding four times in the first 31 minutes at the Amex Stadium.

The downfall of Unai Emery's side started after eight minutes, as Pau Torres' backpass was intercepted by Maxim De Cuyper, whose shot cannoned off the post and into the net off Victor Lindelof.

De Cuyper then tapped in for the hosts' second before a quick-fire Jack Hinshelwood brace cemented the game as one that will not be forgotten quickly for the B6 side.

To make matters worse, Joao Gomes was then given a straight red card after being found guilty of violent conduct, as Emery looked for damage control in the second 45.

Aston Villa fans won't be quick to forget this absolute disaster of an opening game, with so many poor performers on the day.

Pau Torres had one of his worst Aston Villa games vs Brighton

Torres had one of his worst games in an Aston Villa shirt against Brighton, but the same can be said about many other players.

However, the downfall started with the Spaniard, who earned a horrid 3.7 FotMob rating after he gifted Brighton their opening goal with a clueless backpass.

Again in the 23rd minute, Torres just dwelled on the ball before being robbed of possession outside his own box as Georginio Rutter forced a save from Marco Bizot.

He won zero per cent of his three attempted ground duels, making a grand total of zero tackles.

Torres also completed none of his three attempted long balls, and his total of five defensive contributions is fairly low considering the amount of chances Brighton created in and around the box.

Joao Gomes needs to look in the mirror after Brighton display

There were many truly unforgivable performances from Emery's men in the game, none more so than Gomes, who suffered a nightmare debut.

The 25-year-old was only on the pitch for 40 minutes before he was sent off, but did enough damage whilst on it.

Most notably, he made an error that led to Brighton's fourth goal before being sent off for violent conduct moments later.

As highlighted by Opta Joe on X, Gomes is the first player to receive a first half red card in his Premier League debut for a club since February 2012 when QPR's Samba Diakite did the same against Fulham.

This is all while he still had a 100 per cent passing accuracy, proving how bad the other areas of his performance were.

Following his dismissal, he will miss three matches, including Arsenal at home, Hull City away and Nottingham Forest at home.
