Joao Felix blasted as Aston Villa transfer development emerges

Villa News Speaking to Don Goodman

Villa News is delighted to have noted Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman joining its team of Villa experts at the start of 2024. Goodman played for the likes of Bradford, West Brom, Sunderland, Wolves, Motherwell and Walsall in his career and since hanging up his boots, he's been working in the media with Sky Sports. Don will bring you expert insight on all the goings on at Villa.

Don Goodman has urged Aston Villa to not forget about making a move for "overrated" Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix.

Duncan Castles reported via The Transfers Podcast (4 July) that the Villans are interested in signing the Portugal international, who joined Atleti five years ago and won the LaLiga title in 2021.

While some believe Unai Emery could get the most out of the 24-year-old, Goodman has not seen anything to suggest he is worth spending big on.

"I think he's overrated if I'm being honest - that's my honest assessment," Goodman exclusively told Villa News. "I've not seen what other people have seen in him - the odd flash of brilliance aside.

"You see how he was used at the Euros by Roberto Martinez and he was way down the pecking order. I've seen a lot of Portugal at major tournaments and in qualifying and I've never seen it from him - he leaves me underwhelmed when I watch him.

"I might be in the minority, but it's not something I've seen. Plus then you have to factor in the money Villa would likely have to pay for him, so I wouldn't be so sure if I'm them."

Aston Villa should steer clear of Joao Felix transfer

As anyone who watched Portugal play at Euro 2024 would have seen, Joao Felix is not the superstar player many expected him to be.

That is not to say the versatile forward has had a bad career up to this point, but he certainly has not yet justified the £113million Atletico splashed out to sign him.

Emery would no doubt be able to get a lot more out of the player, but it does not seem like a risk worth taking.

Villa fans would not mind a superstar signing, so to speak, but Joao Felix is not that player - or at least not this summer.

There are plenty of players who would jump at the chance to play under Emery in this exciting era at Villa Park, so it makes no sense to pursue this option any further right now.
