Bryan King was "surprised" that Aston Villa were one of the three clubs to vote against the Premier League's proposed spending cap.

The ex-Villa scout thought the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal would have been more likely to vote against the proposed reform than the Villans.

It comes after Premier League clubs voted in principle for a spending cap to replace the current profit and sustainability rules from the 2025/26 season onwards (Sky Sports News, 30 April).

Villa, Chelsea and Manchester United were the only three clubs to vote against the cap and King - speaking exclusively to Villa News - agrees that this suggestion is not the right way forward.

"I am surprised that Villa were one of the clubs that voted against it," King said.

"I would have expected the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, the richer clubs, to perhaps vote against it.

"Having said that, I do think this is another thing which will complicate the Premier League.

"There will be players with a few years left on their contracts when this gets implemented. What happens to the money that they are already owed?"

While the reasons remain unclear, what is clear is that Villa are not in favour of the Premier League's proposed spending cap.
