Aston Villa first-team chance awaits Yeimar Mosquera after U21s exploits
Aston Villa may need to embrace the future at centre-back sooner rather than later, and Yeimar Mosquera looks ready to be part of that.
Signed by Aston Villa from Colombian side Orsomarso in the summer of 2024, Mosquera was always one for the future.
The 21-year-old had played 20 times for Orsomarso before making the move to Villa Park, and was held in high regard there.
After joining Villa, the Colombian youth international immediately headed out on a season-long loan with Spanish outfit Real Union for the 2024-25 season.
However, he would only make seven appearances whilst over there, and thus returned to the West Midlands last summer looking some distance away from a first-team chance in Unai Emery's squad.
2025-26 saw the central defender confined to playing Under-21s football, but his exploits last season are sure to have caught Emery's attention.
How did Yeimar Mosquera fare for Aston Villa's Under-21s?
Aston Villa's Under-21s side enjoyed a far better Premier League 2 season in 2025-26 than their 26th-placed finish in 2024-25.
Indeed, they would record an 11th-placed finish last term, winning nine of their 20 games in English football's premier academy division.
Mosquera would appear in and start 15 of those matches, culminating in just under 1,400 minutes of action.
He would really make those count too, scoring once and providing two assists, whilst posting some underlying numbers that had him right among the best in his position in PL2.
As per FotMob, Mosquera's 11 headed shots on goal ranked him in the top 1.1 percentile of PL2 centre-backs in 2025-26, whilst his 12 shots and two big chances created placed him in the top five and 8.9 per cent respectively.
Meanwhile, his 18 blocked shots put him in the leading 4.5 per cent, with his 23 touches in the opposition box landing the Colombian in the leading five percentile of his positional rivals respectively.
On top of that, Mosquera also completed his two dribble attempts successfully, played 49 accurate long balls and 704 passes, whilst also making a total of 110 defensive contributions.
What is Mosquera's contract situation?
So, after enjoying a fruitful 2025-26 Premier League 2 season in the Under-21s, Mosquera has surely earned some first-team minutes in pre-season this summer at the least.
With the likes of Victor Lindelof, Tyrone Mings and Pau Torres all facing major questions over their Aston Villa futures, it could soon be time for Emery to look towards the future in central defence.
Contracted until the summer of 2028, Mosquera still has time on his side in B6 too, and now 21, he's getting towards the point where senior football needs to be on the agenda for him.
There's no real point in signing young players to watch them star in the academy but not provide a first-team pathway, and so Emery does need to take a good look at Mosquera over the summer.
Should he be deemed not quite ready for a first-team role at Villa Park next season, then the youngster should be allowed to seek a loan move for 2026-27 to get some more senior experience under his belt.
