Dan Bardell believes there is room for Raheem Sterling at Aston Villa but believes finances would hamper a potential deal.

The Times reported on 22 August that the Villans have opened talks with the former England international after being told he can leave Stamford Bridge.

The 29-year-old is one of many stars that have been frozen out by the Blues and a move to Villa Park could now be on the cards.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell has been left unsure by the deal but thinks there is a spot in Unai Emery's squad for the forward.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: "I think the finances involved in that deal would make it very difficult if Villa were interested.

"Technically there is room for a quick wide player who can play as a number ten, that's where Diaby played last season. As far as I'm concerned he hasn't been replaced because Philogene isn't the same.

"I can see merit in a deal for Sterling but I just think the finances will be an issue. He needs a move, he needs to get out of Chelsea. He's not even been registered for their Conference League squad.

"I don't see that being a market that Villa are shopping in."

Aston Villa in Raheem Sterling talks

The Villans lost Diaby to Saudi Arabia earlier in the summer and since then Morgan Rogers has stepped into his role alongside Ollie Watkins.

This may prove to be a stroke of genius by Emery but that is a lot of pressure to put on the 22-year-old in his first full Premier League campaign.

Sterling could prove to be the perfect competition for the youngster signed from Middlesbrough who he could also learn from.

Some Villa supporters aren't sold on the Englishman after his spell at Stamford Bridge but if the finances are right then a deal could suit all parties.
