Aston Villa winger Emi Buendia may yet have hope of making the Argentina World Cup squad amid concerns of injury in the South American’s camp.

Despite enjoying a successful season in B6, Buendia was not called up by manager Lionel Scaloni. The Villa winger was a key figure as Unai Emery’s side went all the way to win the Europa League, including an excellent strike in the final

In 15 games, Buendia racked up 10-goal contributions in the European competitions. After his efforts, he will no doubt have been heartbroken to miss out on the World Cup.

Ahead of the World Cup, Buendia, who is 29 years old, may have missed his final chance to feature for his nation in the biggest football showcase, but not all hope is lost.

Why Aston Villa’s Emi Buendia still has World Cup hope

Buendia may not have made the World Cup squad, but the winger is on a standby list in case of emergency.

Now, that emergency phone call to bring him to North America could just be around the corner according to reports out of his home nation.

DSports Radio in Buenos Aires is reporting that the winger has been told to cancel his holiday and to restart training.

This is due to numerous injury issues plaguing the Argentine camp, and Buendia, who only has two caps for his nation, could be set to benefit.

For the 29-year-old, it would be utterly deserved, as he has been excellent for Villa throughout the season.

How did Emi Buendia perform for Argentina previously?

Buendia has yet to start a single game for Argentina, with both his appearances for the national team coming three years apart too.

In November, the Villa ace featured for just 20 minutes in a 2-0 against Angola. It was not the best impression from the winger, though.

In those 20 minutes, he made just nine touches, and he lost all four ground duels he competed in, leaving him a 0 per cent success.

He did, however, complete all of his six passes, a 100 per cent success, with one of those being a key pass.

Now, with a chance of making his way to the World Cup with the current holders, Buendia will certainly be keeping his phone held close.

It would be a much-deserved award for the 29-year-old after what he has given Aston Villa fans.
