Alan Shearer wasn't happy with Aston Villa's defending in the lead up to Brentford's second-half equaliser.

It was a back and forth game between the Villains and the Bees on Saturday afternoon, finishing 2-2.

Brentford took the lead on 10 minutes but were immediately pegged back thanks to Nicolas Jackson's goal two minutes later.

History would then repeat itself in the second half, only this time it was the away side equalising on 79 minutes.

Kristoffer Ajer's leveller came just two minutes after John McGinn had seemingly handed Unai Emery's side all three points.

A win would've been another big step in the right direction for Villa, but some lapses in concentration at the back cost them dearly.

Which other Aston Villa player did Alan Shearer criticise?

Brentford's two goals on Saturday means it's now 11 goals conceded in six Premier League games for Aston Villa this season.

This works out an average of 1.8 goals conceded per game, which isn't a sustainable ratio if Villa are going to be successful this season.

Speaking on BBC's Match of the Day on Saturday night, Shearer was tasked with dissecting Brentford's second-half equaliser.

Basing his analysis around McGinn admitting that his team have plenty to learn off the ball, Shearer picked up on two Villa players' roles in the goal.

"Yes you absolutely saw that. You saw his (McGinn's) frustration. You could hear his frustration," he said.

"Particularly after him putting them 2-1 up and within a minute or two they concede.

"Matty Cash gets caught ball watching. Ajer give and go, (Joao) Gomes certainly doesn't help Cash out at all.

"That's pretty weak. That is exactly what John McGinn was on about."

So, what do the underlying numbers say about Cash and Joao Gomes' performances in Villa's draw with Brentford?

Why there's still Cash and Gomes positives to take from Brentford

Cash and Gomes will no doubt want Brentford's second goal back, as they could've both done more to prevent it.

After a moment in the game like this, it can be easy to paint their overall performances with the same brush.

However, as detailed in their underlying numbers via FotMob, both players weren't bad defensively whatsoever against the Bees.

Cash won five tackles, seven of his 11 ground duels, made three recoveries, two blocks and two clearances.

Meanwhile, Gomes won four ground duels and one aerial duel, whilst also making one tackle, clearance and recovery.

The Brazilian made 12 line-breaking passes and played seven passes into the final third to boot.

Cash completed 92 per cent of his passes and also played seven passes into the final third, so it's not as if they were both poor all game.

These are the key moments that decide games, though.
