Alan Hutton reacts as Aston Villa confirm exit of Mahmoud Trezeguet

Villa News Speaking to Alan Hutton

Alan Hutton joined Aston Villa from Tottenham in 2011. The former Scotland right-back went on to make over 200 appearances in all competitions for the Villans, helping them reach the FA Cup final in 2015 and promotion from the Championship in 2019. Now a pundit for BBC Sport and TNT Sports, Hutton has also joined Villa News’ team of experts to react to the latest news emerging from the club.

We’re delighted to welcome former Scotland defender Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Aston Villa...

Alan Hutton believes the time was right for Mahmoud Trezeguet to depart Aston Villa after spending three years at the club.

The 27-year-old managed eight goals and three assists in 56 Premier League matches for Villa after joining from Kasimpasa in 2019.

However, the Egypt international fell out of contention under Steven Gerrard and spent the second half of the 2021/22 campaign on loan at Istanbul Basaksehir and has since left permanently to join Trabzonspor and Hutton feels it was the right call.

"I think if Steven Gerrard is evaluating his squad, Trezeguet it has not quite worked," he exclusively told Villa News.

"These are guys that you would probably say their time is up. They have done ever so well after coming in, in flashes, but I don't think they're the future of Aston Villa.

"Steven Gerrard will need to free up some space if he wants to get his own targets in, so that's what he is doing at this moment in time."

Gerrard has already added four new additions to his squad this summer, including the permanent arrival of Philippe Coutinho.

Despite only being 27, it would've been a tough task for Trezeguet to break into Villa's first team plans for the upcoming campaign.
