How long John McGinn could be out for after Aston Villa injury latest

Aston Villa are hoping for a best case injury scenario for John McGinn.

The 31-year-old is the talisman and heartbeat of this Villans team, as he has been for eight years.

That only looks likely to be a bigger factor moving into the new campaign after Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans moved on.

He has now linked up with the claret and blue outfit for pre-season as their tour of Asia continues.

The Scotland international started in Jakarta against Indonesia All-Stars before featuring off the bench against BG Panthum United.

McGinn was forced off at the True BG Stadium as Villa are now left waiting for news.

What injury could John McGinn be facing?

Villa travelled to Thailand for a friendly on Tuesday that was meant to be exactly that, "friendly".

It was anything but as Alejandro Garnacho was forced off with a bloody mouth after a his run was blocked off by a flailing arm.

McGinn faced the same fate later on as a flying challenge saw him stumble awkwardly on his knee.

That prompted Unai Emery to force him off as the Spaniard was taking no risks.

There is now a fear that the skipper has faced an MCL injury, as opposed to an ACL issue in a similar vein to Boubacar Kamara and Amadou Onana.

Jacob Tanswell reported on Tuesday that Villa are hoping for a positive outcome, but that doesn't mean he'll be available immediately.

If he has suffered an MCL issue, McGinn could be out for anywhere between one and six weeks depending on the severity.

With a friendly with Bayern Munich coming up in two days and the Super Cup against PSG coming in a week, it isn't looking ideal for the captain.

Why Aston Villa need McGinn vs PSG

Emery won't care about the Bayern meeting, but he will have an eye on the Super Cup against his old side.

Winning the clash in Salzburg would be yet another jewel in the head coach's crown in B6 and would be nothing less than he deserves.

Things certainly won't be easy against the Champions League winners, but McGinn has previously made light work of them.

In April 2025, Villa secured a quarter-final win in B6, but were knocked out of Europe's elite competition 4-5 on aggregate.

The Scot scored the Villans' goal of the season that night and left the Parisians running scared.

He netted and assisted, while maintaining a 75 per cent pass accuracy.

McGinn also completed each of his two dribble attempts and made four passes into the final third.

To add to that, he completed six recoveries and won four duels as PSG were left chasing his shadow.

Having him fit and available for the upcoming Super League encounter would be massive.

That is exactly why Villa are hoping for the best for McGinn.
