Dan Bardell can't see Aston Villa signing Jonathan David from Lille given the competition for places with Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran.

The Villans have had an up-and-down start to the campaign with goals being an issue in recent weeks, scoring just three in their last five games.

As a result, the addition of a striker could be beneficial to Unai Emery's side with the Canada international of interest in B6, despite his £25million contract demands [TuttoSport].

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell doesn't believe this interest will be materialised into a January or summer signing due to the competition for the number nine spot at Villa Park that already exists.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: "Villa won't do that.

"They're already having to manage with two good strikers in Watkins and Duran. They're both going to be at the club for the rest of the season so I see that as a dead link.

"I think that ship has sailed for David. Villa have got Watkins, they've got Duran and they've both signed long contracts.

"He's a player I think we'll see in the Premier League but not a player we'll see playing for Aston Villa."

Aston Villa unlikely to make Jonathan David move to favour Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran

The 24-year-old forward has been linked with a move away from Lille for many years but has stayed in Ligue 1 for nearly five years.

The ex-Genk forward is out of contract at the end of the campaign which could see his time in France come to an end with Villa maintaining their interest in bringing him to the Midlands.

Given the surprising form of the Colombia international paired with the consistency of his English counterpart, there is no true need for a third striker option at the club right now.

Although it could prove to be a bargain to land David on a free transfer, the risk of having unhappy players around the club would be a massive risk for Emery and Co.
