Aston Villa could be without Amadou Onana for several months after he suffered an injury on Tuesday.

The midfielder started as Belgium faced off against the USA in the round of 16 of the World Cup.

His side ran out 4-1 winners, but did so without the 24-year-old as he was forced off after just 21 minutes.

He clutched his knee on the pitch and was in visible pain and it has since been reported that he's torn his anterior cruciate ligament.

An ACL injury could see the Belgian miss between six and 12 months of action with the Villans.

That is obviously terrible news for everyone involved, but there is at least financial measures in place that will benefit Villa.

FIFA will help Aston Villa financially after Amadou Onana's injury

There is already so much frustration following the ex-Everton man's injury as his absence will leave a hole in Unai Emery's side.

Plans were already in place for the summer window and it doesn't appear that a midfielder was on the shopping list.

To now be without Onana will likely force that to change and cause a stir financially at Villa Park.

As difficult as that will be for the Villans to face, they will at least receive some compensation from FIFA.

As part of their Club Protection Programme, Onana's salary will be covered for the maximum amount of £6.6million.

The player must be out of action for at least 28 days, but there's no doubt that the 24-year-old will do that.

How long will FIFA cover Onana's wages for?

The programme is very specific in the amount they will pay-out to cover wages, but it could work out perfectly for the Villans.

Onana is reportedly paid £140,000-per-week at Villa Park, equating to a monthly fee in the region of £560,000.

That would be a sizable outlay for someone who is on the treatment table, so that being covered by FIFA is a boost.

They pay upto that £6.6m feature, but that will at least allow Onana to be absent for over 11 months.

Considering a typical ACL injury takes between six and 12 months to recover from, that could work out perfectly for Villa.

This is obviously a far from ideal situation, but FIFA's compensation scheme does provide a slim silver lining in B6.
