Lamare Bogarde simply can’t start vs Nottingham Forest, he’ll cost Aston Villa if he does

Lamare Bogarde could prove to be the difference for all the wrong reasons as Aston Villa prepare to face Nottingham Forest on Thursday.

The Dutchman has not shown the claret and blue faithful any sort of quality in his recent performances under Unai Emery.

There has always been a feeling that the 22-year-old would ultimately break into the first team and make a starting spot his own at some stage.

He has put in some standout performances when given the chance in B6, but that certainly can’t be said of his recent showings.

Bogarde could well start again for Villa against Forest, but if he does, it could prove to be the end of the road in the Europa League.

Lamare Bogarde has been poor for Aston Villa

The versatile youngster has long been a utility player for Emery and has featured across various positions within his squad.

That has seen him rack up a healthy 26 appearances in the Premier League, although he hasn’t really proven why he deserves any more than that.

That has only been echoed in recent weeks, starting with the 1-0 defeat away to Fulham, where he started in midfield.

He only contributed two defensive actions, lost five duels and ultimately committed two fouls as the Cottagers secured victory.

Things weren’t any better against Tottenham last time out as he managed just 29 touches while being trampled in midfield with relative ease.

Villa may have their hand forced with Bogarde as they prepare to play Nottingham Forest in a massive encounter at Villa Park.

Amadou Onana needs replacing vs Nottingham Forest

The young Dutchman may have been terrible recently, but the door may still be open for him to start due to Amadou Onana’s injury.

The Belgium international is set to miss the encounter against the Reds after going off after just 55 minutes in the first leg.

It was a blow to lose the 24-year-old, and that has only been made worse by his lack of availability at Villa Park.

Emery is now left with a decision of who to bring in, with Bogarde and Douglas Luiz representing the only true options.

The Brazilian could represent the better option, largely due to the failings of his midfield colleague in recent appearances.
