Aston Villa: Lucas Digne’s contract examined amid mixed season at Villa Park

Aston Villa have seen up-and-down performances from Lucas Digne this campaign.

The France international has been a typically consistent figure ever since coming through the doors at Bodymoor Heath.

He has gone on to be worth every penny of his move from Everton, despite initial questions over the fee paid to Everton in January 2022.

Those sorts of reservations have emerged again this season as some of his showings have left a bad taste in the mouth.

That could leave Digne with an uncertain future at Aston Villa as we assess his current deal at Villa Park ahead of the summer.

What is Lucas Digne’s contract situation at Aston Villa?

Since the addition of Ian Maatsen nearly two years ago, the 32-year-old has been forced to share minutes throughout the campaign.

That has continued this season, but the former Barcelona man has largely remained as the first-choice for Unai Emery.

His experience and quality on the ball can make a difference and has certainly helped the Villans to many positive results this season.

There will be concerns over his age moving forward, but with his contract running until the summer of 2028, he is likely to remain a key member of the squad.

That is especially the case with the Frenchman, reportedly paid £135,000 per week in the Midlands, equating to a yearly wage of £7million.

Lucas Digne Aston Villa wages

Digne has faced some negative reviews at Villa this season, and at those wages, an exit may be on the cards before his deal is allowed to tick down any further.

When could Digne leave Aston Villa?

There is no doubting the left-back’s quality and the difference he can make when given the opportunity in claret and blue.

That has been on show this season, with a recent example being his match-winning assist for Tammy Abraham against Sunderland.

His cross was pinpoint and afforded the Englishman to get a deft touch on the ball to carry it into the far corner.

That sort of ability would be a risk to lose for Emery and Co., but could represent the start of a much-needed renovation in B6.

Should the right bid come in over the summer, it would make sense to let the 32-year-old go to get some sort of return for the defender before it’s too late.
