Tyrone Mings showing clear signs of regression in key Aston Villa area – here’s why

Tyrone Mings has endured a frustrating last few years as an Aston Villa player.

A plethora of injury problems have severely limited his gametime over the previous few seasons, which have unfortunately continued into the current campaign.

Mings has been sidelined for a total of 17 games through injury this term, with the combative defender having made just 14 Premier League appearances in 2025-26 so far.

Now 32 and entering the twilight years of his career, the 18-cap England international is fit once again, and will be hoping to be handed enough opportunities by Unai Emery to prove he can still play a big role at Villa Park moving forward.

Why Tyrone Mings’ impact is lessening in vital Aston Villa area

Having initially signed on loan from Bournemouth in January 2019, Mings became a permanent Aston Villa player in the summer of that same year.

Since then, he’s played over 200 times for the Villans, helping the club solidify themselves back in the Premier League, and playing a key role in helping them progress into the perennial European football contenders they’ve become.

But, Mings is only contracted at Villa Park until the summer of 2027, meaning next season will be his final 12 months under contract in the West Midlands as things stand.

One of the big reasons why Mings has become a beloved figure among the Villa Park faithful is his duel-winning ability, with his physical, no-nonsense approach a welcome throwback to centre-backs of yesteryear.

Unfortunately, and as illustrated by the above graphic from Sofascore, this side of his game is showing clear signs of becoming less and less of a strong suit of his.

Indeed, his 52 per cent of duels won in the Premier League this season is his lowest recorded number in the top flight since he became an Aston Villa player, having never dropped below 60 per cent for each season.

How are other aspects of Mings’ game holding up?

This is a worrying and significant decline, and one that could point towards Mings now being past his best for Aston Villa.

However, there are still other elements of his game that would contest that notion, as he is still recording a passing accuracy of 89 per cent.

Mings is also recording an average of 4.5 clearances per game, and has made zero errors leading to a single shot or goal in the Premier League this season.

Every dressing room needs veterans and leaders, and so whilst Mings may not be as impactful on the pitch as he once was, there’s still no doubting how crucial a figure he is to Emery’s side off it.
