John McGinn sends hilarious message after what ex-Aston Villa teammate Matt Targett did vs Birmingham

Aston Villa captain John McGinn seemingly spent his Monday night watching Birmingham City lose to Middlesbrough.

The Scotland international is missing at Villa Park through injury, but is clearly keeping tabs on football across various leagues.

There were no Premier League matches on Monday, but the Championship was on TV as bitter rivals Blues hosted their latest second-tier clash.

Kim Hellberg’s side travelled to the Midlands and secured a 3-1 victory to keep their automatic promotion hunt alive.

Matt Targett helped Boro to three points, attracting the interest of former B6 teammate McGinn on social media in the process.

It is a different time in claret and blue under Unai Emery compared to when the left-back completed his move from Southampton.

Dean Smith brought the Englishman in as a new defensive option after promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.

Things never truly worked out for the now 30-year-old at Villa Park, and he eventually departed to join Newcastle United.

He is now on loan at Middlesbrough and is a regular as they go in search of automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Targett is certainly doing his bit as he bagged a brace against Birmingham City on Monday and celebrated in front of the home fans.

That caught the attention of McGinn, who took to Instagram to say: “Hahaha, Tigsy, what a guy, what a celebration.”

The Villa skipper wasn’t alone in that, as many fans spoke out on social media to poke fun at their local rivals after a former player netted at St Andrews.

And that only amplified when he grabbed his second of the evening after just 26 minutes.

Targett only scored three goals for Aston Villa

It was certainly a surprise for anyone associated with the Villans to see the defender scoring one, nevermind two.

Targett only ever scored three in claret and blue, with two of those coming in his debut campaign against Brighton and Leicester City.

The latter came in the iconic Carabao Cup semi-final win as Trezeguet netted the winner to send Villa to Wembley.

His next came two years later, away to Crystal Palace, before he ultimately went on to join Newcastle in the same season.

McGinn loved what he saw from Targett, as did the Villa fans, as the ex-B6 man made his presence felt against Blues.
