Liverpool's five-game losing streak in the Premier League came to an end on Saturday as they beat Aston Villa at Anfield.

However, Villa tasted a humiliating 2-0 defeat against Liverpool in a game where the Reds dominated.

The confrontation feeds into the unpredictable nature of the Premier League, with the Villans victims once again.

Aston Villa Premier League hopes rise

Despite the defeat at Anfield, Villa are expected to finish sixth in the Premier League according to Opta's Supercomputer.

  • Villa could finish with 58.63 points
  • The Villans have a 0.79 per cent chance of becoming title winners

Emery's UEFA Champions League hopes were dashed at the end of last season after a controversial 2-0 defeat to Manchester United on the final day.

Now, they sit 10th in the UEFA Europa League table after Villa's shock defeat to Go Ahead Eagles last matchday.

Predicted an 18.71 per cent chance, the Villans' Champions League hopes are still slim, and an Europa League victory may be their only way in.

As a result, Emery will have more than silverware on his mind when Villa face Maccabi Tel Aviv on Thursday.

Unai Emery needs to make one important improvement

Villa have netted just nine goals in the Premier League this season, seven from open play as well as two set-piece goals.

Comparatively, Manchester City leads the league in goals scored, netting 19 after 10 games played.

This number is unacceptable for a team aiming for a top-four finish. Not to mention that the Villans have only created 13 big chances compared to Man City's 33 this season.

Villa have also conceded 10 goals this season, and while this is a concern, it is one more than their goals scored, which highlights the extent of the issue. The Villans are simply not scoring at a rate which will guarantee European football next season.

Therefore, the message is clear: if Emery wants to end the season well, Villa needs to start scoring consistently.
