Leon Bailey is on the verge of bringing an end to his time at Aston Villa as details emerge of the deal that will see him become a Roma player.

Roma entered talks with Villa over a move for Bailey last week and it seems that official confirmation is now imminent.

Bailey struggled to fit into Unai Emery's system and an exit has been on the cards for a while now.

However, details that are emerging on the terms of the transfer suggest that NSWE - Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens - have made a rare misstep.

Roma to pay Aston Villa £19m for Bailey

It was thought that Villa would land somewhere in excess of £25million for Bailey, but that figure appears to be wide of the mark.

According to an update shared by Fabrizio Romano on X (18 August), Roma will pay Villa £19m for Bailey after an initial season-long loan, which will cost them between £1.7m and £2.6m.

At best, then, Villa will be getting £21.6m for Bailey, who is under contract at Villa Park until 2027 with the option of a further year.

While getting Bailey's wages off the books is a positive, it must be said that this is a very low fee in the current market - especially given Roma's stature and willingness to pay for players.

For what it's worth, Villa paid £25m for Bailey in August 2021, and that is surely a figure they should have been looking to recoup.

Bailey transfer fee could be used on Nicolas Jackson

Villa are now in the clear when it comes to PSR issues, and it will be nice to actually talk about possible incomings for a change.

  • Aston Villa paid Bayer Leverkusen £25m for Bailey in August 2021
  • Villa look set to sell Bailey to Roma for £19m, plus a loan fee of around £1.7-£2.6m
  • Bailey scored 16 goals in 110 Premier League appearances for Villa, while assisting 17 times

Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson is a name that has once again emerged as a possible target, but Chelsea are likely after a fee of around £60m for Jackson.

The £21.6m Villa could bring in from Bailey's sale could therefore contribute straight towards that deal, which would give Villa fans a welcome lift with a fortnight of the transfer window to go.
