Aston Villa ‘to land instant Martinez upgrade’ as ambitious move teed up

Emi Martinez has been one of the best goalkeepers at Aston Villa, but there could potentially be a change between the sticks soon.

The Argentina international has been a reliable number one at Villa Park since signing from Arsenal in 2020.

While the 32-year-old has gone on to win two Copa Americas and the World Cup with his national side, he’s yet to lift silverware with the Villans.

There have been some shaky performances from the 32-year-old this season, though, as the Lions were knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and need to rely on other teams to get a top-five spot in the Premier League.

Martinez transfer possible at Aston Villa

Unai Emery may opt to sell Martinez in the upcoming transfer window if he feels the need to make changes ahead of next season.

In the final years of his career, the Argentine goalkeeper could also look for pastures new and win trophies at club level.

Robin Olsen is currently the Villans’ backup shot-stopper, and they’ll arguably need to bolster the position if the World Cup winner leaves.

It looks like the Lions already have a plan to sign a quality number one in case the former Arsenal ace moves next summer.

Andriy Lunin transfer from Real Madrid wanted at Villa Park

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Emery needing a replacement for Martinez soon, with clubs in Saudi Arabia willing to pay a hefty sum for him.

Real Madrid’s shot-stopper Andriy Lunin has emerged as an option for the Lions to replace the Argentina international, according to Fichajes.

The news outlet reports (2 May) that the Villans know they may need a reliable number one if the World Cup winner departs.

It’s been claimed that Villa have identified the Ukraine international as a priority option in case they need to bolster their goalkeeping department next summer.

Over the years, Luinin has played second fiddle to Thibaut Courtois at Madrid, but he’s shown his qualities when called upon.

Manchester City are also eyeing the 26-year-old, and he could arguably be an upgrade on Martinez at Villa Park.

Supporters admire the former Arsenal ace, but his erratic moments this season have changed some people’s opinions in B6.

Emery’s current focus will be on securing a Champions League spot for next season, but what happens in the summer will be interesting.
