Aston Villa are keeping tabs on young Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles, according to Joe Crann.

The Star journalist reported on 16 December that the Villans are one of a number of clubs showing an interest in signing the 19-year-old.

Villa are believed to have the Owls youngster on a shortlist of potential signings, despite there being no imminent plans to sign the Northern Ireland international

There are multiple EFL clubs interested in taking him on loan in January, while a new contract could still be agreed at Hillsborough.

It will certainly be interesting to see how Unai Emery and Monchi approach the January transfer window after a summer of PSR problems.

This forced Douglas Luiz out to Juventus in a move which has arguably negatively impacted all parties.

It is unclear whether similar financial issues will have an effect in the winter but if they do, signing young stars with plenty of potential could be an avenue that the B6 club go down.

This method was utilised last January when Morgan Rogers came in and he has proved to be an excellent signing and is now one of the most important players this campaign.

If Charles was to come in, it is very unlikely that he would be able to dislodge Emi Martinez as goalkeeper at Villa Park.

As an option for the future, the Northern Irishman could prove to be the number one for many years to come if the deal goes through.
