Aston Villa will be fearing the worst after John McGinn was replaced at half-time during a 3-1 win over Wolves on Saturday (21 September).

The 29-year-old has been instrumental for the Villans ever since arriving from Hibernian in 2018, having made 243 appearances to date and being a regular figure under Unai Emery.

With Villa now competing in the Champions League, next coming up against German giants Bayern Munich in the competition, Emery needs all of his stars fit. Those hopes have just been crushed.

Speaking via Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday (21 September, 3:52pm), Tim Sherwood said: "It's really bad news, it looks like he has done his hamstring."

If Sherwood is correct about a possible hamstring injury, Emery has just been handed a disastrous blow in terms of competing in the Premier League and the Champions League.

John McGinn injury concerns emerge in Aston Villa v Wolves

Despite having a quiet game against Wolves, completing 80 per cent of his passes and only winning 50 per cent of his ground duels, there is no underplaying how vital McGinn is to Villa [FotMob].

The 29-year-old showed his class during Villa's 3-0 Champions League win over Young Boys, completing 85 per cent of his passes, creating a chance and competing 67 per cent of his long balls [FotMob].

In addition to this, he won 100 per cent of his tackles in midfield, making four recovering and two clearances, helping the Villans to their first victory in Europe since the 1982/83 campaign.

There are few players at Emery's disposal who can bring what McGinn brings to the team, ranking in the top 85 percentile for non-penalty goals and the top 76 percentile for assists [FBref].

Also ranking in the top 78 percentile for shot-creating actions and the top 93 percentile for successful take-ons, McGinn would be a massive miss if he has suffered a hamstring injury.

The three points were huge, but this could be bigger.
