Villa Park insider hails ‘clever thinking’ as Aston Villa narrowly escape major punishment
Bryan King has hailed Aston Villa for their “clever thinking” after they narrowly avoided a 10-point deduction.
The ex-Villa scout claims the club would have been preparing all summer to solve their financial troubles.
As reported by the Daily Mail (3 September), Aston Villa were “hours away” from a 10-point deduction in the Premier League before selling Douglas Luiz to Juventus on 30 June.
But King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – feels as though the club were always in control of the situation.
“I don’t think this was ever a concern,” King said.
“This wouldn’t have been an idea which came about at the last minute. They would have known and they would have been preparing for that.
“In the end, they were able to avoid the points deduction and make a bit of money. It was clever thinking.”
Aston Villa avoid 10-point deduction in the Premier League
Villa enjoyed a positive season last time out, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. However, had they been docked 10 points, all of that hard work and progress might have been derailed.
Therefore, the decision to sell Luiz to Juventus felt like a necessary one. Supporters would have no doubt been frustrated to see a key player sold, but it appears as though Villa actually made the best of a bad situation.

They were able to keep hold of the majority of their stars, and in Amadou Onana, they have brought in a player who already looks to be an effective replacement for Luiz.
