Bryan King believes Aston Villa "have been caught cold" in their pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

The ex-Villa scout claims that Unai Emery's side have missed out on the 24-year-old.

As per Ben Jacobs via X (31 July), Villa had a club-record offer accepted for Gallagher by Chelsea in June.

However, as per Fabrizio Romano via X (5 August), the midfielder has verbally agreed terms to join Atletico Madrid with a £34million transfer in place.

And King - speaking exclusively to Villa News - is not surprised to see Gallagher accept a move to Spain.

"Aston Villa look to have been caught cold on this," King said.

"Yes, they are in the UEFA Champions League, but so are Atletico Madrid. In addition, Diego Simeone is an exciting manager to work under.

"He has been part of Atletico Madrid for many years and that will be an exciting move for Gallagher. Villa certainly look to have missed out."

Gallagher would have been an exciting addition at Villa Park.

The England international would have added some much-needed midfield depth for Emery ahead of the 2024/25 campaign getting underway.

Gallagher's experience at the highest level would have been beneficial in the Champions League. However, it looks as though the Chelsea ace will instead be playing in Europe with Atletico Madrid.

As a result, Emery and the club will now need to identify brand-new targets before the transfer deadline.
