Aston Villa have reached a verbal agreement with Luton Town to secure the signing of Ross Barkley this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer specialist reported via X on Monday (3 June) that the Villans are understood to have agreed a transfer fee of around £5million with the Hatters to bring the former England international back to Villa Park.

Barkley is expected to agree personal terms at the beginning of July, with medical tests and his own signature still needed to get the deal over the line, but the deal is getting very close to its completion.

Writing on X, Romano said: "Aston Villa have reached a verbal agreement with Luton Town to sign Ross Barkley.

"Understand fee will be around £5m. Final part needed, medical tests and player’s formal signature — agreement on player side expected at the beginning of July.

"Here we go, soon."

Have Aston Villa and Unai Emery signed Ross Barkley in the summer transfer window?

When Barkley left Villa Park after a slightly disappointing loan spell a few years ago, few supporters would have expected to see him back playing in claret and blue so quickly. But now, this seems like an excellent piece of business.

After a tough couple of years, the former Everton man has managed to get his career back on track and while Luton were relegated last year, he was one of the Premier League's most consistent performers week in and week out.

For only £5million, this deal could well prove to be a bargain. If Barkley can get anywhere near the standards he produced at Kenilworth Road last term, he will be an incredibly valuable addition to Emery's midfield.

Whether or not he will be a regular starter at Villa Park remains to be seen, especially given the quality already in Emery's ranks, but with the Champions League to now contend with, Villa are going to need as many options as they can get.

Hopefully, the final stages of this transfer will go off without a hitch and Barkley will sign on the dotted line.
