Aston Villa: Dan Bardell awestruck by Pau Torres recent displays, 'absolutely out of this world'

We’re delighted to welcome Sky Sports journalist Dan Bardell as our exclusive Aston Villa columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the club…

Pau Torres has been “out of this world” following his recent displays in the Premier League for Aston Villa, according to Dan Bardell.

The Spanish international signed for Villa from Villarreal over the summer in a deal worth up to £38million including add-ons despite being linked with some of Europe’s biggest clubs in recent years [Sky Sports].

The 26-year-old appeared to struggle initially to adapt to life at Villa Park, but he now seems right at home and has played a key role in the Villans getting off to a strong start this season.

Bardell has been impressed by the passes Torres has been making for his side as he’s never seen a centre-back play the ball around with such confidence.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “I thought he was flawless against Luton. I think when he first came in, he maybe had to come into the team a little bit quicker than Emery would’ve wanted due to the Mings injury.

“I think he did struggle with the speed and physicality initially, which is understandable. I think that would be the same with any defender coming from La Liga. The Premier League is a really unforgiving league in terms of tempo, pace and physicality, so it took him some time to get used to it, but there were still some little flashes there of what he was going to do.

“The home games against teams that are going to sit back, he’s ideal because he’s almost like an extra midfielder, he’s really going to help with breaking the lines and playing incisive passes. That’s what he did against Luton, that’s what he’d done in certain other games as well.

“Defensively I thought he was really good, I thought he stood up to the physicality of Luton. He did a couple of bits of excellent defending and his distribution is just absolutely out of this world. The way he can thread a ball through, he kind of does these lofted through passes.

“I’ve never really seen a centre-back be able to ping the ball around in the way that he does, he’s just been absolutely brilliant over the last couple of weeks.”

In other Aston Villa news, a senior man may have quit before he was pushed out of Villa Park by Monchi.
