Aston Villa plot move to sign Nico Williams amid contract stand-off with Atheltic Bilbao

Aston Villa are one of four Premier League clubs that are monitoring the situation of Nico Williams at Athletic Bilbao, according to 90min.

The news outlet reported on its website on Tuesday (24 October) that Villa remain keen on the 21-year-old winger after trying to sign him over the summer, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham also interested.

It said the Spain international’s potential suitors are waiting to see how his contract stand-off with the La Liga side plays out as his deal is due to expire in 2024.

Sought after

It’s pretty clear that Williams is highly sought after due to his massive potential following a number of impressive performances for Bilbao over the past few years.

The report noted that the Basque club are confident that he will pen a new deal at the San Mames, but with the interest in him growing, that could become a difficult task.

Alongside the Premier League outfits, it said Bayern Munich and Juventus are also keeping a close eye on how his situation develops.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Villa go back in for the Spaniard in January after expressing an interest in signing him over the summer, with the potential to land him on a cut-price deal.

It will all come down to the winger and what his plans are, though, because he is likely to make the decision that secures him the most regular football and doesn’t hamper his chances of getting game time with Spain.

In other Aston Villa news, a Villa youngster could be one to watch following his “exceptional” progress.
