John McGinn the only Aston Villa standout v Wolves with 4 key pass display
Aston Villa have enjoyed a strong start to the new Premier League campaign under talented manager Unai Emery.
But the Spaniard will have been displeased at this club’s latest showing, with the man in the dugout perhaps expecting more than a 1-1 draw against Wolves on Sunday (8 October).
Hwang Hee-chan opened the scoring for the hosts in the 53rd minute, with Pau Torres netting an equaliser just two minutes later.
Other than the defender’s goal, there were very few reasons for Emery to smile at the full-time whistle, but he can take plenty of pleasure from the performance of midfield maestro John McGinn.
As per SofaScore, the Scotland international made four key passes throughout his 90 minutes on the pitch, twice as many as any other player.
His overall passing game was a sight to behold at Molineux, with the midfielder completing all three of his attempted long passes and three of his four attempted crosses, with McGinn finishing the game with an 88% overall passing accuracy.
Furthermore, he was also sound defensively, with the Scot making two interceptions, bettered only by Wolves ace Mario Lemina (three), who was sent off in the closing stages of the match.
The Villa star was heavily involved in proceedings, and helped his side out in keeping possession and getting out of trouble, with McGinn winning four fouls, again more than any other player.
The display should give the 28-year-old huge confidence as he looks forward to a massive international match with Scotland, with Steve Clarke’s men taking on Spain in a Euro 2024 qualifier on Thursday (12 October).
In other Aston Villa news, one player is set to miss training for five weeks with Emery handed a fresh blow.
