Aston Villa weigh up move for Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet - Fabrizio Romano
Aston Villa are looking to sign Clement Lenglet from Barcelona in the closing stages of the summer transfer window, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The transfer expert reported via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday [29 August] that Barca are aware of Villa’s interest in the defender.
Lenglet is said to have “multiple options available” as Villa await developments on the situation.
Romano added that Barcelona are “sure that Clement Lenglet will leave” before this week’s transfer deadline.
Room for one more?
Villa have already spent £31.5million on signing Pau Torres this summer, but they appear ready to bring in another centre-back from LaLiga.
Tyrone Mings’ season-ending injury on the opening day of the campaign has likely altered Unai Emery’s transfer plans.
Lenglet, still aged just 28 and therefore possibly not yet at his peak, boasts plenty of experience of top-level football.
That includes a spell on loan in the Premier League with Tottenham last season when making 24 starts.
Tottenham decided against signing Lenglet permanently, but Villa may now be about to pounce as the Frenchman has no future at Camp Nou.
Lenglet still has three years to run on his contract, so Barcelona will only sell if his valuation is met by any interested clubs.
It has been a busy few months for Villa and it seems that another signing could yet be incoming before the window closes.
In other Aston Villa news, Emery could hand a player his full debut for the club against Hibernian.
