Cameron Archer to leave Aston Villa on loan for newly-promoted Premier League club

Villa News Speaking to Alan Hutton

Alan Hutton joined Aston Villa from Tottenham in 2011. The former Scotland right-back went on to make over 200 appearances in all competitions for the Villans, helping them reach the FA Cup final in 2015 and promotion from the Championship in 2019. Now a pundit for BBC Sport and TNT Sports, Hutton has also joined Villa News’ team of experts to react to the latest news emerging from the club.

We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park…

Alan Hutton believes Cameron Archer could be loaned out again by Aston Villa this summer in order to continue aiding his development.

Archer, 21, played just six times in the Premier League for the Villans last season before being sent out on a half-season deal to Middlesbrough.

In the North-East, the Walsall-born striker scored 11 goals and supplied six assists in 20 Championship appearances to help Michael Carrick's side reach the play-offs.

Unfortunately for Boro, they missed out on promotion but Hutton believes Archer is now well placed to join a team on loan who did manage to make the step up to the Premier League.

Speaking to Villa News, Hutton said: "Maybe [they move him on] but the question to ask is, 'where does he go?'.

"Will he go to a top-six team? I don't think so. That's not me saying I can't see it but in the future, he might.

"Moving forward, his best opportunity would be to try and break into the Aston Villa team or going out on loan again at a higher level to get experience of playing week in, week out.

"Is there a team that's been promoted that he could go to and thrive at? That could be the next level for him to progress.

"We'll have to wait and see but I always like to see young players breaking into the first team. It's brilliant for the fans as well, so hopefully he can do that."

Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton were promoted to the Premier League, with Archer scoring twice in a win over the Blades in February before netting in a defeat to Luton in April.

He scored against other teams who did well in the Championship last season too, such as Norwich, Coventry and Swansea.
