'Massive' Pau Torres signing gives Aston Villa 'exactly what they need' amid transfer development
We’re delighted to welcome Aston Villa podcaster Ty Bracey as our exclusive Aston Villa columnist each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the club…
Newly announced signing Pau Torres will give Aston Villa the defensive depth the desperately need to challenge in Europe next season, according to Ty Bracey.
Following his £32.1 million move from Villarreal [Fabrizio Romano], the Spaniard joins a strong defensive unit at Villa but adds a new level of quality and depth to Unai Emery’s side.
With the club having to tackle even more fixtures following their qualification to the Europa Conference League next season, Villa needed to address this area.
Bracey has claimed the move will not only give reprieve to the likes of Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa but also provide genuine competition to the relatively unchallenged and established Villa centre-back partnership.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bracey said: “It’s massive for us, really. It creates some good competition for those defensive places. It is a bargain, but you have to remember that he only had a year left on his contract. You’re not buying the player, you’re buying them out of their contract.
“But it’s one of those where we put the burners on and we offered them a fee, and with a year left on the contract you’d be silly not to sell him if you’re going to lose him on a free next year.
“Mings and Konsa have been class, but it definitely puts some depth out there and that’s exactly what we need.
“Especially going into Europe, we have the potential to play up to 60 games this season. We have to have the depth and we have to have the numbers.“
In other Aston Villa news, journalist Dan Bardell claims that the rumoured Ferran Torres would make an excellent signing due to his Premier League experience and versatility.
