Aston Villa deal to sign Tammy Abraham off after 'terrible' turn of events in Italy

Villa News Speaking to Alan Hutton

Alan Hutton joined Aston Villa from Tottenham in 2011. The former Scotland right-back went on to make over 200 appearances in all competitions for the Villans, helping them reach the FA Cup final in 2015 and promotion from the Championship in 2019. Now a pundit for BBC Sport and TNT Sports, Hutton has also joined Villa News’ team of experts to react to the latest news emerging from the club.

Aston Villa will not be re-signing Tammy Abraham from Roma this summer after he suffered a horror knee injury, according to Alan Hutton.

Abraham, 25, has had to undergo reconstrutive surgery on his left ACL after being streteched off in Roma's 2-1 win over Spezia on the final day of the Serie A season on 4 June [Reuters].

He was introduced into the game as a substitute in the 64th minute but 18 minutes later he was forced off after overextending and twisting his left leg in a battle for the ball against former Chelsea teammate Ethan Ampadu.

Villa had been linked with re-signing their former loan star, who had struggled at Roma this season by scoring just nine goals in 54 appearances across all competitions.

The Mirror reported on 11 May that Roma were open to selling the England centre-forward for £40million with iNews saying on 2 March that Villa and Everton were in the hunt to sign him.

Hutton, who knows Abraham well after playing together at Villa Park, now believes there's no chance Aston Villa would attempt to sign the striker when no one can be sure what he'll be like once he returns from his injury.

"I think the deal will be off if I'm honest," said Hutton to Villa News.

"It's a real shame to have such a serious injury on the last day of the season. It's terrible back luck and you've got to feel for him.

"I know him really well and he'll work ever so hard. He's dedicated to what he does and he'll probably come back fitter and stronger than ever.

"I send my best wishes to him but in terms of a transfer, it won't happen because clubs are going to be paying a lot of money and you genuinely don't know how people are going to come back from serious injuries.

"Look, millions of people have been through it and been absolutely perfect - but you never know. There's no way you'd shell out a lot of money for an injured player."
