Aston Villa want to sign Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans on free transfer
Aston Villa are set to make an offer to Youri Tielemans to convince him to sign on a free transfer, according to a report by The Athletic (5 June).
The Belgium midfielder saw his exit from Leicester City confirmed with his contract due to expire at the end of the month, and Unai Emery is said to be a big fan of the 26-year-old.
Now Aston Villa are set to join the race for his signature and are expected to make a formal approach “soon” according to the report.
“Aston Villa have joined the race to sign free agent Youri Tielemans,” they wrote.
“Villa manager Unai Emery would like a move to be completed quickly after missing out on a midfield target in the January transfer window.
“The club are expected to make an approach for Tielemans soon.”
Strength in depth
Aston Villa have a midfield that is very strong and deep with options that include John McGinn, Douglas Luiz, Boubacar Kamara, Jacob Ramsey, Leander Dendoncker plus any other potential incomings.
Tielemans at his best is easily as good as if not better than those options, and that means we’d have a far stronger squad for our European campaign next season.
Emery’s talent ID has always been one of his strongest attributes as a coach and he knows exactly what he wants to make his teams better and maximise the players that he has available to him.
If he can get Tielemans performing at a level that we have become used to rather than what we saw for a lot of the most recent campaign, it would be an absolute bargain.
There is no doubt going to be plenty of competition for his signature, so the quicker we move the better chance we have of sealing a deal. Fingers crossed.
In other Aston Villa news, an academy talent could get a chance after Ashley Young’s departure was confirmed.
