Aston Villa told to complete record-breaking Tammy Abraham transfer as fresh speculation emerges
We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park…
Alan Hutton would love to see Tammy Abraham return to Aston Villa in the summer after the Roma striker was linked with a move to Villa Park.
On 2 March, iNews reported that Villa are in pursuit of re-signing 25-year-old Abraham, who spent the 2018/19 promotion-winning season on loan in claret and blue from Chelsea.
However, it is understood that if Aston Villa were to sign the England centre-forward permanently, it would cost them £67million because that’s the buy-back price agreed with his former club Chelsea.
Despite the huge price tag, Hutton wants to see his former teammate back at B6 – but he does admit that Abraham is likely to want to chase Champions League football should he quit Roma this year.
“If I’m totally honest, I think Tammy would want to play in the Champions League,” Hutton told Villa News.
“He’s been at the club and he knows what it’s all about but they’ve moved on since then and they’re a better team with a fantastic manager.
“Villa are really building something for the future and I’d like to see him there.
“I believe he could add something with the likes of Watkins. They need that goalscorer and different options up front as well.
“It’d be a great signing if they can get him. But would he choose to go back to Aston Villa? I’m not sure if the likes of Manchester United are sniffing about.”
Abraham scored 26 goals in 40 appearances across all competitions as Villa won promotion to the Premier League, via the Championship playoffs, in 2019.
The former Chelsea striker scored a vital goal in Villa’s playoff semi-final win over West Brom in what was his final appearance for the Villans at Villa Park.
If Villa were to sign Abraham for the £67million fee wanted by Roma, it would be a new club-record deal for the Villans, whose current record deal was the £38million agreed with Norwich for Emi Buendia in 2021 [Sky Sports].
In other Aston Villa news, the club has been tipped to sign a new striker to aid their bid to return to European football.
