Rangers defender Calvin Bassey would be 'open to talks' with Aston Villa over a proposed £25m move to the Premier League, according to Sky Sports News.

Bassey has emerged as hot property for several Premier League sides after his stand-out performances for the Scottish giants in their journey to the Europa League final.

Villa boss Steven Gerrard signed him for Rangers from Leicester City two years ago and is now interested in being reunited with the 22-year-old who can play both centre-back and left-back.

According to Sky Sports, Villa are one of several clubs interested in the player with Rangers setting his asking price at a Scottish-record £25m to allow him to move on.

Interestingly they also state that the player would be open to talks over a move, despite reports that he is happy in Glasgow [Daily Record] and not actively looking to move on from the club.

Talent

Gerrard is very keen to bolster his squad with quality, and Bassey would represent a top young talent joining the club to add quality depth to the first-team.

Able to play at both centre-back and left-back, the club would seemingly be bringing him in as cover in both positions considering the arrival of Lucas Digne and Diego Carlos already during Gerrard's tenure at the club.

However at just 22-years-old there is clear room for progression and development, and Gerrard already knows the player well from their time together at Ibrox.

It would be an expensive deal, without doubt, with his reputation always rising and Rangers looking to build on their own successes this season.

But if a deal is there to be done then the club should be looking to seal it ahead of other competition to send out a real statement of intent and show they mean business for the upcoming season and beyond.
